VALLE DEL ULLA

ESCLAVITUDE
Santuary of Esclavitude, baroque style from the 17th and 18th Centuries.
IRIA
FLAVIA:
In Iria you may visit the Church of Santa María, built over the ruins of a
cristian-roman temple from the Ist Century; its front and towers from the 12th Century and the rest of
the temple is baroque style from the 17th Century. Opposite to this temple is the House
of Coengos, an Arte Sacro Museum, central office of the Camilo José Cela Foundation.
PADRÓN:
In Padrón we suggest a visit to the Church of Santiago, where you can find "O Pedrón"
the altar where the boat which brought Apostol Santiago´s corpes was tied to. In the
town outstands the Town Hall building (18th Century), the walk of Espolón and La Casa
de la Matanza or Museum House of Rosalía de Castro. Nearby in Herbón you may find
the Convent of San Francisco (14th Century). The local green pepers, lamprey, salmon
and trout from the River Ulla are recommended.
XIRIMBAO-PONTEVEA:
In Pontevea there is a river beach and a bridge from the 14th Century. On your way
between Padrón and Pontevea you may visit the trout and salmon reserve of Couso with
a refuge for fishermen and a suspension bridge called Xirimbao. In Rúa de Francos we
can find an ancient gothic cruceiro and a roman bridge over the roman road: Santiago-Padrón.
PONTE
ULLA:
In Ponte Ulla, an ancient bridge close to the church of La Magdalena and, on the river
banks of the Ulla, next to the New Bridge is the Palace of Vista Alegre, in which´s
garden you may find a magnificent colection of very old Camellia trees. In San Mamede
de Rivadulla is the Palace of Ortigueira also known as of Santa Cruz de Rivadulla, with a
beautiful and romantic walk of centennial Olive trees and magnificent examples of
Camellia trees which were most probably the first brought to Galicia and a whole series
of tropical and subtropical species acclimatized in this welcoming valley of El Ulla.
Nearby is the spectacular defile Paso da Cova in which the river passes between two
walls 30 m high and 2 metres wide.
PICO
SACRO:
Pico Sacro is 530 metres high. Its pointed shape, which contrastes with the rounded
shape of most of Galicia´s hills, and the fact that its the place where most storms break
turn it into a mithic and sacred mountain. Legend describes it as the place where Queen
Lupa lived. On its top is the chapell of San Sebastian built in the 9th Century.
