SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

In the Plaza del Obradoiro is the spectacular obradoiro façade of the Cathedral, a master piece of the baroque style, by its staircase you may reach the Pórtico de la Gloria carved in the 12th Century by Maestro Mateo. 

On its right hand the western façade of the cathedral´s cloister and on its left side the Palace of Gelmirez romanic style from the 12th Century. On the left side of the Square is with a plateresc façade the former Royal Hospital today the Hotel de los Reyes Católicos. 

Opposite to the Cathedral is the Palace of Raxoi (18th Century) Central office of the Regional Goverment´s Presidency and Town Hall. 

The fourth building in the Square is the Palace of San Jeronimo with a romanic façade from the 15th Century, today the University´s Central office. 

In the Plaza de la Inmaculada stands the neoclasic façade of the Cathedral (18th Century), also called of Azabachería and the Monastry of San Martín Pinario (18th Century). 

Nearby is the Church of San Miguel and just infront is the 14th Century Museum of Pilgrimages. Close by is the Casa de la Troya a Museum which reproduces the student boarding house it used to be. In the Plaza de la Quintana is the Puerta Santa (Holly Gate) with its romanic shapes. 

The Monastry of San Payo de Antealtares has in its Museum a primitive altar that belonged to the Cathedral. The House of la Conga or of Canonigos (18th Century). 


In the Plaza de Platerías you may see the Cathedral´s most ancient façade the Clock Tower or Berenguela. The cloister´s eastern façade, also known as "del Tesoro" of a plateresc style. The Fuente de los Caballos (Fountain of Horses) and the baroque Casa del Cabildo. In Rúa del Franco (Franco Street) stands the Palace of Fonseca (15th Century). In Rúa Nova (New Street) stands the romanic Church of Santa María Salomé (12th and 14th Century) and in Rúa del Vilar the Casa del Dean (Dean´s House) of a baroque style. 

Santo Domingo de Bonaval is also worth visiting inside it is the ethnographic Museum of O Pobo Galego that has a famous spiral triple staircase and a gothic style chapel which is the Panteón de Gallegos Ilustres (Pantheon for Illustrious Galicians). 

The Convent of San Francisco de Valdedión (17th Century) in whichs atrium stands a monument to San Francisco by the sculptor Asorey. The romanic Colegiata of Santa Maria la Real de Sar, that causes amazement because of its inclined pillars and finally the Alameda with its centennial trees and views to the Obradoiro façade.
