PAZO DE OCA - OURENSE

PAZO DE OCA:

The place known as Plaza de Oca, is composed by the façade of the Palace, the chapell and the houses of whom used to be the workers of the palace. The Chapell-Church was built from 1713 to 1752, with a ground plant in the shape of a greek cross and in Galicia´s Baroque style. Today´s Pazo was built by the end of the 17th Century and begining of the 18th, over the remains of an ancient fort. It has important gardens with exotic species.

MONASTERIO DE CARBOEIRO:

In Santa Eulalia de Cira you can see the ruins of the Castle of Cira (12th Century). On the River Deza banks stands the rebuilt Monastry of Carboeiro (romanic, 12th Century) in the middle of a spectacular landscape. Near are the waterfalls of River Toxa and the breathtaking views of the confluence of two rivers: Deza and Ulla, where you can practice trekking. It is interesting to visit the Church of Taboada, with romanic elements and beside it the ancient medieval bridge over River Deza.

MONASTERIO DE OSEIRA:

Known as the Galician "Escorial". One of the most importante monastries of Galicia next to Sobrado dos Monxes. Cistercian romanic, gothic and other styles. The front was built at the beginning of the 18th Century, even though the church was built in the 12th Century. To the original Cistercian building were added elements from other styles: baroque and renaissance. Attached to the building next to the Monastry there is an Ethnographic Museum.

OURENSE:

The historic town of Ourense stands round the Cathedral and the Plaza Mayor. Las Burgas "thermal waters", and the roman bridge called "El Puente Viejo" over the river Miño should also be visited. In the ancient part of the city a visit to the Cathedral should be made. The Cathedral started to be built in the 12th Century adding to the original romanic style gothic, renaissance and baroque elements. The Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Magdalena were the former market centre and before that the cemetary.
