FISTERRA - Coast of the death

MUROS:
Muros offers an interesting view of the river. Small town with arch and balcony houses.
The Church of San Pedro has a gothic style with romanic elements and a baroque tower.
On Monte Louro is the convent of San Francisco with its field of cruceiros and a Via
Crucis on the way up to the top of the hill. Louro Beach.
CARNOTA-
ÉZARO
Carnota. Next to the Parish Church of San Mamede (18th Century) is the famous hórreo
(raised granary), the biggest of Galicia (35 m long), and the largest beach in Galicia.
Some kilometres away from Ezaro, the river Xallas turns into a breathtaking cascade,
today altered by the channel built to lead the river towards the power station. Over the
mouth of river Xallas arises Monte Pindo considered as the Celtic Olimpus, an impressive granit mass formed by big stones with suggesting shapes.
CEE
- CORCUBIÓN
Corcubión. A fishermen small town with an interesting ancient area with tipical local
architecture and good tourist facilities. Parish church of San Marcos, romanic.
Cee. Has a busy tradding activity and a relatively important industry. In the centre is the
House of Cotón, a palace of the 18th Century in good state of conservation.
FISTERRA
The ancient part is formed by narrow streets that lead to Plaza de Ara Solis, where the
chapel of Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso is (18th Century). Following the lighthouse
road you pass by the Parish Church of Santa María de Fisterra which has in its interior
the Chapel of Santo Cristo. The lighthouse is situated at the top of Cape Fisterra, with
incredible cliffs which were considered by the Romans as the end of land.
MUXÍA
Little before reaching Muxía it is advisable to stop at Moraime to see the romanic
Church of San Xiao (12th Century). In Muxía stands the remarkable santuary of A Nosa
Señora da Barca, with a chapel from the 17th Century. By the foot of the atrio is the
"Pedra de Abalar" (Abalar Stone) which following tradition can only be moved if those
who step on it are in grace. Also important is the Parish Church of Santa María de
Muxía, with its romanic Pórtico.
CAMARIÑAS
Camariñas, fishermen town famous for its remarkable handmade lace. The Parish Church
of San Xurxo (18th Century) has the most beautiful altarpieces. A few kilometres away
is the lighthouse, high up at the top of Cape Vilano.
VIMIANZO
Castle of Vimianzo: In 1465 the Archbishop Alonso de Fonseca II was held prisoner
here for two years (it is said in a cage) by Bernal Yañez de Moscoso. The Irmandiños
destroyed it in their rising against aristocracy. Today it has been restored and during the
summer weekends it is a place for local artscraft demonstrations.
