STRATEGICALLY SITUATED IN THE LOWER MIŅO REGION.
Owing to the ideal location of Palacio de Barreiros, which many years ago converted it into a fortress in war time, makes it in peace time a marvellous starting point for discovering the province of Pontevedra and the place where Ourense meets Portugal. The region of A Paradanta, in the lower Miņo area is a crossroads of paths, culture and different types of wildlife. High holy sanctuaries, stone crosses, corn granaries, castles and fortresses, co-exist with rivers and stunning landscapes to make up a region of great natural beauty.

A PAZO BUILT TO DEFEND A REGION
The actual Palacio de Barreiro dates from the XVII C and was home to high Galician noble families. Its foundations were built on the ruins of the XIV C Torre do Couto and it was built for defence purposes in the style of a Galician pazo. It was constructed in granite with very thick walls. It has a monumental balustrade, a stone staircase, a slit window for defence, an enclosed courtyard, chapel and battlements and elements that give the enclave its strategic fortresslike character, much appreciated in the times of the Spanish wars.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
To spend the night in Palacio de Barreiro is an experience that takes you back to the house's glorious past, when the mythical Abbot of Villar and Couto led the popular revolt against the French, during the War of Independence. Guests can also enjoy the XVII C wine cellar (lagar), where home made wines and liquors can be sampled.

Without having to travel very far, in the rich region of A Paradanta, guests can discover natural parks and beauty spots, have a try at high risk sports, go pony trekking or take a walking tour at high and low mountain level. In an area which boasts a wide range of historically diverse architectural styles from preromanic to baroque, a stay at Palacio de Barreiros also allows the visitor to enjoy the varied local gastronomy which is renowned for lamprey fish, roast kid and cod fish.
